Poem: Gothic Mermaid

Gothic Mermaid
I flail in panic,
resisting
as I descend
into the stunning yet macabre
underwater cave.
The intensity is consuming,
but the pain of the saltwater
rushes inside,
cleanses me,
and becomes one with my tears.
After a desperate search for air -
equilibrium finds me
and I am able to let go.
The gasping stops,
and I become comfortable with my own fears.
My eyes close -
In the strangely familiar darkness,
I transform,
nearly weightless in the abyss of the sea,
swimming freely
in the depth of my own soul.
