Mother Nature

I'm sure it will be easy for you to tell from my writing that one of my biggest muses is Mother Nature. In all her glory, she provides me with so many inspirations. Since the time I first begun writing poetry, this has been true for me. It’s certainly not an uncommon muse for we writers. This is true of Emily Dickinson, the first poet I fell in love with. Despite her dark musings, nature brought a little light to soul – you can feel it as you read her work.
Currently, it’s raining where I am. I would have to say that rain, especially when accompanied by a wild thunderstorm, is near the top of my list of nature inspirations. My theory is that because I am a fire sign, I naturally am drawn to water to balance myself out. I love all things water – primarily, the sea. I am a big fan of snorkeling when I am on a tropical vacation. Here at home, I like to kayak and swim in the warm months. I always bring something with me to write about what I felt when I saw the coral reef in its miraculous colors, or the canopy of trees that overhung as I floated by. Though I translate a lot of those musings into e-files, I do keep some of those water-crinkled pages because when I look at them I will always remember where I was when I wrote them.
I love to travel. The infinite beauty of our planet never ceases to amaze me. Last year, at almost this time, my wife and I took our first road trip together. We drove up through New England and into Canada, all the way to the tip of Nova Scotia. There, we boarded the ferry and went to Newfoundland, where I was able to meet my soul sister Kristy for the first time. Kristy and I had been friends for over a decade, and it was one of the most moving experiences to finally meet her in person. The week that we spent there was all about nature. I saw the rugged coastline and fresh ponds with views I could have only imagined. Now that it has been almost a year, I am nostalgic for all of the memories we made. My favorite was the night that we all played instruments in the cabin in the woods. I have never been so far removed from human civilization. As I existed among nature and true friends, I felt more alive than I ever have. I await the time that I will travel there again.
Last weekend, we went on a short nature walk, and I snapped the photo that I shared at the top of this post. I haven’t yet completed the poem that the photo inspired, so I will share another that nature helped me to create. In keeping with my water theme, I decided to share one that I began writing shortly after I went snorkeling. Have a good weekend everyone. Get out there, and enjoy nature.
I would love to hear about some of your favorite things in nature!
